Project

C. D. Stamps Community Center Tullahoma, Tennessee

Description

This project involved working with a Tennessee municipality (City of Tullahoma). The initial stage of the project consisted of evaluating an existing school building, dating to the 1940’s, at the proposed site. This scope of work included providing an evaluation of the existing building structure. The purpose of this evaluation was to determine if it was feasible to renovate and design new additions to the existing structure as compared to demolishing the existing building and constructing a new facility.

The evaluation determined the construction of a new facility would be the most economical solution. The design consists of a new 14,500 sq. ft. recreation center at a cost of $1,152,000. Included in the facility are a gymnasium, game room, restrooms, computer center, cultural center, weight room, and conference room.

The cultural center includes a display case in which the local community can display historical items about the community. Bricks from the existing building were cleaned and reused in the cultural center and the exterior sign. The gymnasium consists of telescoping seating for 200 people, has 1 main basketball court, and 2 secondary courts when the seating is in the closed position. The game room is located at the curved wall and continues into the center of the building where the control center of the facility is located. The exterior consists of ground-face concrete block base, 2 brick colors, manufactured stone panels at the front entry, and a curved aluminum canopy over the front entry doors.

The structural system is a pre-engineered steel building frame. The gymnasium’s climate is controlled by two (2) mechanical units and the rest of the facility is controlled by a third mechanical unit. Two of the units were removed from the existing building and reused in the new facility. Dunlap-Bumpas provided architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical design services from our "in-house" staff. Civil services were provided by Griggs & Maloney, Inc., under a joint-venture agreement.
